Accelerate with Google sponsors Google-led BUILDUP Workshops

With many unfilled technology jobs, there has never been a better time to learn the new skills necessary to enter the tech workforce or launch a startup. The BUILDUP Technical Workshops goal is to educate underrepresented groups to do both, learn new skills or launch a startup. The first two of the six sessions led by Accelerate With Google in our workshop series will educate and empower entrepreneurs.

To reduce further barriers to entry Accelerate With Google will sponsor both the “How to Build Your MVP” workshop on May 26th and the “Design Thinking” workshop on June 3rd.

To register for the event use AccelerateWithGoogle as a coupon code for a complimentary pass.

May 26th – How to build your minimum viable product (MVP)

This course is designed to provide the students with insight into the primary goal of their product and the availability of tools and services which can be used to quickly iterate towards that goal by avoiding “reinventing the wheel.”

Stanton Jones is a Software Engineer at Google, working with the Gmail for Work team to build quality enterprise email services. Before Google, I worked at various startups in San Francisco, working on projects ranging from payment processing to mobile web development. I worked in Boston for two years, where I joined the founding team of Expedox document management. While studying at MIT, I participated in BattleCode, a yearly AI programming competition with a video game theme. When I’m not coding, I’m working out, watching cartoons, or networking, which for me involves pool, whiskey, and a good hefeweizen.

Kyle Wanamaker is a Software Engineer at Google. At Google, Kyle works in Material Design and builds applications leveraging Google’s web technologies like App Engine and AngularJS. Kyle is the founder and organizer of the Black Techies Meetup Group, a community of knowledge and learning in for engineers of color. Before working at Google, Kyle lived in New York City and was software engineer at Tumblr and Rent The Runway. When he’s not behind a computer, Kyle enjoys photography and playing lots of soccer. Kyle is originally from Philadelphia, and attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

June 3rd – Design Thinking

The workshop emphasizes Design Thinking, a process for tackling complex challenges creatively and with an emphasis on the human – whether that’s your customer, your colleagues, your client, or yourself. You will learn and practice skills related to qualitative research, insights development, getting groups to bigger ideas, rapid prototyping, and storytelling. By the end, you’ll walk away with a common language and process to take back to your team to invoke more successful and creative collaboration.

Nancy Douyon is a User Experience Research Program Manager at Google. She has a special focus on remote user research methods and emerging markets. Her daily quest is to increase the usability of products, applications, complex systems and websites across different cultural ideals and cultural practices. Prior to Google, Nancy worked at IBM Interactive Research, Accenture Experience Agency, and Intel’s Mobility Group.  She was instrumental in creating a User Experience Lifecycle approach to help better understand how non-US markets are using US products in their everyday lives.

From the pierogi at the Polish Festival in Riverhead, Long
Island, to the grass-fed beef rancher in Nebraska, they have all told me that the best ingredients,
cooked simply yield the best results. If they are not cooked, do them for a
further minute, and keep going until they are as you like them.

As the students go through each step, there are accommodations that can be
    made to increase their Independence.
